One of the toughest lessons I’ve had to learn in music is “if your market doesn’t fit your music, you may have to take it elsewhere.” Now, if time and effort aren’t much of a factor for you, then by all means, keep knockin on that steel door. You have to explore at sometime or another anyhow. I, personally, ran into that steel door trying to market my music in VA. There are plenty of venues that will let me perform, but if the fanbase at the venue is looking for southern-style music, that excludes me. That’s the life of a person not headlining.
With that said, know your market. It may be the difference between they types of responses you receive when you perform. Once you have your buzz going, the “market door” can be removed due to your fanbase being the main population at your shows. This business can make even the most well-known artists go back to taking babysteps, so don’t be ashamed of what you have to go through to get to where you want to be. Sometimes, it will take for you to get a buzz in a market away from home before home loves you.
Until next time, I’m gonna apply this shit to myself…and… I’m gonna stay F.R.E.S.H. with what’s next I. N.ever F.ail
